Ethnographic Open-Air Museum was founded in 1924. The project envisaged to transport homesteads and social buildings characteristic of Kurzeme, Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale to the museum and re-erect them there. In 1928 the first building - a threshing-barn of the 18th century - was set up on old sandhills covered by a pine forest at Lake Jugla. In 1932 the museum was opened to the public and 5 houses from Vidzeme and 1 house from Latgale served as the first exhibits. Already in 1939 all the regions were represented by 40 objects. The collection of Latvian Ethnographic Open -Air Museum is made up of 140 000 items. At present 121 ancient buildings with more than 3000 household objects are on display in the area of 87 hectars. Almost all the sections of the population and ethnic groups as well as their social and material culture are represented there. Like households of L?vi fishermen and Russian old-orthodox, craftsmen workshops of woodworkers and smithies, Latgale potters, Vidzeme weawers and potters.

The mission of the National History Museum of Latvia is to collect, preserve, research and popularise spiritual and material culture from Latvia and the world from ancient times until today, which has archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, historical or artistic significance, in the interests of the Latvian nation and its people. Visitors can view the evolution of Latvia and its people from the Stone Age up to nowadays. The exhibits display a variety of themes � the ancient times, the history of medieval Riga castle, the lifestyle of peasants and manors in 18-19th c.

Until 1.10 open on Thr 11.00 - 19.00. Here you may witness the advancement of Latvian art up to 1945. The museum has a rich collection, about 14 000 exhibits among which are works of famous Latvian and Russian painters such as V. Purvitis, Janis Rozentals, etc.

The Pauls Stradi?� Museum of the History of Medicine was established on October 1, 1957, and opened to the public in 1961. The true father of the museum was Professor Pauls Stradi?� (1896-1958), who began to think about a museum of this kind in the 1930s. Dr Stradi?� had an extensive collection of medical equipment and other items. Together with his colleagues, he arranged the items from the collection so that they would be appropriate for medical students and specialists. The professor was a cancer specialist, and much of the collection involved items from that area of specialisation. Today the museum�s collection includes a wide variety of items from its founder, and these are exhibited in relation to the various aspects of the museum�s exhibits. The collection also includes a vast range of materials from the personal collections of the pharmaceutics historian D?vis Bl?ment?ls and the pharmacist J?nis Maiz?te. The collection is constantly being updated, and the exhibits are available for public viewing, as Pauls Stradi?� had always intended. Only 5% of the museum�s holdings can be exhibited on the four floors of the main building (Antonijas iela 1). All told, the museum possesses more than 190,000 items, stored in five sections � Ancient and Rare Books and Printed Works; Manuscripts and Documents; Photo, Phonographic and Cinema Recordings; Applied Sources; and the Fine Arts.
